尊敬的各位来宾，各位亲朋好友：

让我们永远铭记这样一个时刻：公历二00八年八月十一日即古历七月十一日凌晨三时十分，在这一刻，一颗平凡而伟大的心脏停止了跳动，一个普通而又坚强的共产党员走完了他平凡而又不平凡的人生道路，享年71岁。

我的父亲生于战乱时期，他的童年并不幸福，但就在这个并不幸福的童年里，我的父亲接受了他足以享用一生、教化后人的私塾学堂教育。就是在这六年半的私塾学堂生涯里，我的父亲凭借自己过人的记忆力，强闻博记：左传春秋烂熟于心，经史子集过目不忘；谈笑间引经据典，我等后辈晚生皆不能比。

也是在六年半的私塾学堂生涯里，父亲精通了珠算，并且自学了会计知识，这也造就了后来在全县第一届会计技能大赛第一名的辉煌，从而光荣地成为全县第一批具备会计师资格的会计师之一。

还是在这六年半的私塾学堂生涯里，父亲秉承了中华传统文化的精髓，形成了自己独特的处世哲学，养成了包容而又宽广的胸怀，也铸就了刚正不阿的品格，豁达开朗的性格、积极乐观的人生态度。

拾起记忆的碎片，父亲坎坷的人生经历恍如昨天，父亲亲切的音容笑貌犹在身边。

上个世纪五十年代的那场大洪水，几多难民，离乡背井，流离失所。我的父亲时任监利县难民工作组主要成员之一，长驻岳阳火车站，负责接收难民，常常是几日吃不上一粒饭，那可谓是殚精竭虑，一心为民。

也是在上个世纪五十年代，父亲时任白螺公社会计，从此开始自己的会计生涯，从此一个不做假帐，一个公正客观，廉洁奉公的会计便出现在这个人世间。

还是在上个世纪五十年代，监利县浩大的四湖总干渠水利工程开始了，从此工地上便有我父亲忙碌的身影，多年如一日地忘我工作。可以这样说，古有大禹治水三过家门而不入的传说，今有父亲工作几年少回家的佳话。

四湖总干渠工程结束后，因监利县水利建设需要，父亲被调任县水利局属薛潭北王泵站会计，虽然位卑职小，但我的父亲这一干就是二十年。

二十年如一日，父亲以泵站为家，为泵站最初的建设和后来的发展立下了汗马功劳。

这二十年的光阴，即见证了北王泵站的发展，也见证了我父亲大人的清白。

二十年会计工作，父亲凭借自己过人的本领，过硬的作风为北王泵站赢得了信誉，也受到了上级有关部门的赞誉。这二十年的会计生涯，印证了我父亲的名（承誉），我父亲的字号（建辅）。

曾记得，与父亲小聚，父亲曾言：“我经手的任何一笔帐目，我所做的任何一本帐本，都经得起时间的考验。”话语中透出的那份自豪，那份自信，一直到现在，都在震撼着我的心灵，都在激励我如何做人。

父亲的一生是勤俭的，虽然常年在外，但仍然承包有自己的责任田。每年的工粮水费按时足额上缴，从不欠国家一分钱，也从不因为农活而耽误工作，更不会假公济私。父亲大人在弥留之际念念不忘的还是农田的田间管理，甚至很清楚地告知我们什么农药要打多少，要兑多少水。他是在用他的行动在教育自己的子女，要自食其力，更要忠诚自己的事业，要靠自己的双手来创造未来，那属于自己的未来。

父亲的一生是坚强的。71年的风风雨雨，几多磨难，几多屈辱，几多坎坷，几多沉浮，几多打击。尤其是今年初，在那五十年难遇的雪灾里，我和二兄先益先后发病，再至于五月三日我二兄先益的与世长辞，对父亲的打击可谓惨重，可谓沉痛。然而我的父亲大人啊，您选择的是默默承受，您选择的是坚强。我一次又一次被这无言的大爱所触动，被这如山的父爱所震憾。

父亲的一生是伟大的，他老人家的伟大，在于对子女教育的成功上。

我们敬爱的父亲大人从不厉声批评指责，更不会有打骂子女的时候。有的只是热情的表扬，有的只是和善的引导，有的只是谆谆的教诲。每次回家，坐在父亲的身边，总会被父亲爽朗的笑声所感染，总会被父亲无形的人格魅力所感化。

我的大哥和我先后走上教师工作岗位之前，父亲只对我们兄弟两人说了同样的一句话：教好书，不要误人子弟。言语虽简单，却让我们刻骨铭心。这句话鞭策着我们认真教书育人，力求为人师表。这也正是我父亲一生最引以为自豪和骄傲的事情。而对于十个孙辈，不分孙子外孙，均以出生先后按序号呼之，一视同仁，自称十全十美。激励他们勤奋学习，努力向上，与人为善，做社会有用的人。孙辈们也很争气，走入社会已经参加工作的都能独挡一面；正在求学的都能积极上进。这与父亲的言传身教是分不开的。

然而，这样一个能给我们带来笑声，带来欢乐的慈祥的老人；这样一个能给我们带来前进动力的精神支柱；这样一个能给我们带来知识的知慧长者，却这样突然地，以我们大家不能接受的方式离去了。离开了他亲爱的邻居，离开了他难以割舍的家人，离开了他衷爱的美好人生。万里江山失色，亲朋好友痛泣！可他的精神却永远在激励着我们后辈晚生，坚强而又坚定地走向未来。

让我们继承起父亲的优良品质，开拓属于我们自己的天地，完成父亲那未竟的遗愿。

安息吧，我可亲可敬的父亲，愿您在去天堂的路上走好！

   　青筋即静脉血管----通过其把血液送回心脏的血管。当静脉血液回流受阻，压力增高时，青筋常常在人体表面出现凸起，曲张，扭曲变色等反映状。为什么血液回留受阻呢？实际上就是体内积滞所致。各种淤血，痰湿，热毒，积滞等生理废物不能排除体外，就会导致全身各个系统都会发生障碍，此时在脸部，腹部，脚部特别在手掌和手背的青筋就非常明显。所以青筋就是人体的积滞。

　　如果血脉胆固醇，血脂，积滞过多，血粘过高则血液循环障碍，容易引起血脂高，血糖高，血压高等心脑血管疾病。

　　如果经脉有痰，湿，淤，热，毒，积滞堵塞，就会加剧炎症反映，不通则痛，使痛症加重。

　　如果在胃肠到内有废物，毒素，细菌，粘液，宿便发生积滞，则久积成毒，毒害人体，轻则形成各种黑斑，白斑，血痣，重则导致肿瘤，癌症。

　　根据科学家尸体解刨的研究，发现癌症和衰老都是由于血淤，废物的积滞引起，所以积滞是百病之源。故《黄帝内经》讲；经脉者，决死生调虚实，不可以不通。

　　根据临床经验有以下症状者都可以考虑积滞的存在；

　　（1）大便难，颜色黑，粘稠大，大便时间长，用纸多。

　　（2）胃纳差，食不甘，口干涩，舌苔厚。

　　（3）容易疲倦，容易感冒，反复感冒。

　　（4）气短乏力，精神不佳，头脑不清，失眠多梦。

　　（5）按摩，拔罐，拍打，刮痧容易出现的痧斑点块。

　　（6）容易皮肤过敏，皮肤色素沉着，见老人斑，雀斑，黄褐斑，白斑，血痣等。

　　（7）食凉觉寒，食热觉热，虚不受补者。

　　（8）长期性的劳心劳力，工作紧张，精神抑郁。

　　（9）经常性自我感觉低热。

　　以上面几种症状为主的人，多数处于亚健康状态。以上九种症状越多，则说明体内积滞程度越深，多数处于疾病状态。甚则肿瘤发生，大病将至。

　　所以人体身上出现的青筋，表明体内废物积滞过度，是体内废物痰湿淤热毒积滞的一种外在反映。俗话说；青筋过鼻梁，无事哭三场。身体内的废物积滞越多，青筋就越明显。一般几天不通便的人，青筋就特别明显，通过青筋的形态就可以观察出体内积滞的状态。

　　二．积滞的性质

　　（1）痰（脂肪）--结节，脂肪瘤。

　　（2）湿--疲倦乏力。

　　（3）瘀--淤血痛症。

　　（4]热--上火，烦躁，炎症。

　　（5）毒--肿瘤，癌症。

　　三．青筋形态，颜色

　　1。青筋形态--积滞的程度

　　(1)青筋--轻；

　　(2)凸起--中；

　　(3)扭曲--重。

　　2。青筋颜色--毒害的程度

　　(1)青色--轻；

　　(2)紫色--中；

　　(3)黑色--重。

　　一般随着青筋的形态，颜色变化，则表示体内废物积滞越严重，所谓久积成毒。如果青筋到达凸起，扭曲，紫黑时，往往表示体内积滞的废物越毒，甚至表示大病将至。所以，身体上任何部位出现青筋，都表示相应部位所代表的问题。

　　四．青筋的分布

　　（一）手部青筋

　　小孩有积滞一般都在鼻梁上出现青筋，但是3岁以后往往就不在鼻梁上出现，而是在手上出现青筋。所以成人体内的代谢废物越多，手上青筋就越多。某部位出现青筋，表示相应内脏俯组织有积滞。

　　1。手背青筋

　　手背青筋提示腰背部有积滞，容易导致腰积劳损，疲劳乏力，常见腰酸背痛，甚至出现肌肉紧张，硬结节。

　　2。手指青筋

　　小孩手指青筋，提示肠胃积滞消化不良。成人手指青筋，不但提示消化系统有问题，且还反映了头部血管微循环障碍，脑血管供血不足，头部不适，严重则头晕，头痛，中风。

　　3。手掌青筋

　　（1）大鱼际有青筋，往往提示腰腿痛和下肢风湿关节痛。

　　（2）腕部横纹线有青筋，往往提示妇科疾病，如月经不调，带下等。

　　（3）内关青筋，往往提示心脏方面疾病，如心肌劳损，心烦，心跳，心闷，失眠多梦等。

　　（4）内关青筋越靠近内关穴，则越早发生心脏方面的症状；内关青筋越凸起，扭曲，紫黑，则心脏疾病越严重。甚至预示着心脏将要发生大病。

　　（5）生命线附近有青筋，多见于肝胆功能代谢有问题，容易口苦口干，烦躁，胸闷，肝病等。

　　（6）虎口生命线起端有青筋，女士多见于月经前后乳房胀痛。

　　（7）食指指掌横纹有青筋，提示容易左侧肩周炎。小指指掌横纹有青筋，提示容易右侧肩周炎。

　　（8）拇指指掌关节横纹有青筋凸起，扭曲，提示心脏冠状动脉硬化。紫黑则冠心病发作。

　　（9）中指指掌关节横纹有青筋凸起，扭曲，紫黑，提示脑动脉硬化。

　　（10）手指青筋，甚至浅显到连手指节间都能见到。提示肠胃有积滞宿便，其人多患有习惯性便秘或肿瘤，痔疮等。改变排便习惯后，青筋会逐渐浅淡，消失。

　　（11）手掌到处可见青筋，表示胃肠积滞，血脂高，血粘稠，血压高，血液酸性高，含氧量低，血液容易凝聚积滞，则容易出现头晕，头痛，疲倦乏力，身体虚弱等。

　　（12）肩部青筋，容易发生肩周炎，而且特别难治。

　　（二）头部青筋

　　1。当太阳穴青筋凸起时，往往提示头晕，头痛；当太阳穴青筋凸起，扭曲时，表示脑动脉硬化；紫黑时，则容易中风。

　　2。额头有青筋，提示长期劳心劳力，紧张，工作压力或心情压力大。

　　3。鼻梁有青筋，提示肠胃积滞，容易胃痛，腹胀，消化不良，大便不利；紫色时则情况更加严重。

　　4。眼袋青筋，俗话讲，脾虚眼袋大，肾虚眼袋黑。眼袋青筋，往往提示妇科疾病，月经不调，带下。

　　5。嘴角腮下有青筋，往往提示妇科疾病，带下湿重，疲倦乏力，腰漆酸软，下肢风湿。

　　6。舍下青筋凸起，相应于人心脏的冠状动脉，容易引起心脏疾病，心肌劳损。如果青筋凸起，扭曲，紫暗，则容易发生冠心病。

　　（三）胸腹部青筋

　　1。胸腹部青筋，多注意乳腺增生，经行乳房，胀痛，情志抑郁。

　　2。腹部青筋，俗话说；“青筋过肚”。这已经是比较严重的积滞；成人肝硬化腹水，肿瘤后期。腹部青筋往往是比较难治的疾病。

　　（四）下肢青筋

　　1。漆部青筋提示漆关节肿大，风湿关节炎。

　　2。小腿有青筋静脉曲张严重者往往发生腰腿疾病，风湿关节痛。特别多见于久站的老师，久行的农民或喜欢走热时冲凉的人士。因为寒则入骨伤筋，这是许多人日常生活中不够注意的问题，最后久积成疾，甚至影响高血压很难下降。

　　总之，人体任何地方出现青筋，不但影样外表美观，更重要是提示身体废物积滞的反映。青筋即积滞的清除关键是平时要学会清肠排毒。清肠排毒与通便概念不同，很多人总以为天天大便都正常，忽略了清肠排毒。这就等于我们日常生活中经常要清除厕所，水壶里的垢，汽车要清积碳一样。清肠排毒和消除青筋的凸现，最好是平常就运用拍打和刮痧疗法

Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.

Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.

Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw　her little boy sitting at the key- board, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, “Don't quit. Keep playing.”

Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left　hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was mesmerized.

That's the way it is in life. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren't exactly graceful flowing music. But when we trust in the hands of a Greater Power, our life's work truly can be beautiful.

Next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Don't quit. Keep playing.”

不要停，继续弹

为了让儿子能在钢琴方面有长足的进步，一位母亲带着儿子去听帕德瑞夫斯基的音乐会。待她们坐定之后，那位母亲看到一位熟人，就穿过走道过去跟朋友打招呼。

小男孩好不容易有机会欣赏音乐厅的宏伟，他站了起来，并慢慢地摸索到了一扇门旁边，上面写着“禁止入内”。大厅里的灯暗了下来，音乐会马上就要开始了。那位母亲回到座位，却发现自己的孩子不见了。

这时候，幕布徐徐拉开，大厅里的聚光灯都集中到了舞台上的士坦威钢琴上。而让母亲吃惊的是，她的儿子竟然坐在钢琴面前，自顾自地弹着《闪烁，闪烁，小星星》。

这时候，著名的钢琴大师走上台，并且迅速地走到钢琴旁边，并在男孩的耳边轻声说道：“孩子，别停下，继续弹。”

帕德瑞夫斯基俯下身去，用左手在键盘上弹奏低音部分。然后，他的右手绕过男孩的身后，弹奏出优美的伴奏。这位年长的钢琴大师和年幼的初学者一起，将原本紧张的气氛变成了一种全新的体验。全场的观众都听得入迷了。

其实，生活也是如此。我们所取得的成就不一定要多么显著。我们尽力了，结果却不一定能演奏出优美流畅的音乐。但是，如果我们相信大师的力量，我们的生活就会变的非常美丽。

当你准备伟大作品的时候，仔细地侧耳倾听，你会听到大师的声音，在你耳边轻声说道：“别停下，继续弹！”

    前两天无意中通过一个QQ群知道初一班主任和一个初中同学离我现在的地方很近。
    思绪一下回到了十一年以前的初一。这个数字是我掰着指头算了半天得出来的。一下子，楞了，宛若隔世。
    已经十一年没有见过胡老师了，他的样子我还记得很清楚，特别是那双近视眼镜后面的严肃锐利的眼睛，当年令我如坐针毡过，令我胆战心惊过，直到现在我仿佛还能感觉到从那镜片后折射出来的寒光。
    呵呵，好像把敬爱的老师形容的过于恐怖了。当然，那都是在做我“坏事”心虚的时候。更多的时候，比如带我们狂读英语的时候，对他则是敬爱和崇拜。他帮我们进行了很好的英语入门，后来再也没有碰到哪个老师像他那样教过英文，那样的活力，那样的激情，那样的多姿多彩。要是从初中到大学都是他教的话，我现在英语肯定很厉害了。
    多年过去了，也读了N多年书，初一留下的记忆却最多，而在当年的精英班，我并不突出。作为一个“资深”（读过十几年书）的学生，我敢说老师的教学方法是成功的。
    今天周末，就去见了一面。感觉老师和同学都苍老了不少，而我，又何尝不是呢？十年的时光变迁，沧桑了容颜，还有心灵。
   谨以此对老师说声谢谢，并纪念那纯真的年代。

 

       The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.

今年是我国现代杰出的文学翻译家傅雷先生（1908—1966）一百周年诞辰。回顾傅雷坎坷的58年人生，他在翻译、美术、文艺评论等诸多方面，给后人留下了丰富的文化精神遗产，其中最珍贵的，自然是在文学翻译领域。应该如何评价傅雷的翻译成就呢？依我看，如果说林纾是近代文学翻译史的一座里程碑，那么傅雷就是现代文学翻译史的又一座里程碑。这座里程碑上蕴含的诸多文字，有待傅雷研究学者一起来解读，而我，只是肤浅地从中领悟出了以下三个方面。     卓越的翻译成就 　　傅雷一生翻译了43部文学名著，各种中译本累计发行近千万册。就介绍法国文学来讲，翻译数量之多，译文特色之鲜明，译作影响之大，至今无人能出其右。法国现实主义文学的兴起，曾在世界文学史上产生重大影响，中国的读者，正是得益于傅雷等翻译家的译笔，接触和领略到巴尔扎克等法国名家的旷世名著。特别在新中国成立的早期，在当时“一边倒”主要翻译出版苏俄文学的环境下，傅译法国文学作品的出现，使得中国的读者在单调的文学图书市场中，难得闻到了一点多元文化的气息，或多或少接受到了世界优秀文化的熏陶。从世界文学佳作得以在中国传播来讲，傅雷功不可没。 　　更难能可贵的是，傅雷以自己的翻译实践所形成的翻译观，丰富了中国的翻译理论。他以自己独有的美术史家的眼光，认为“翻译应当像临画一样，所求的不在形似，而在神似”，“理想的译文仿佛是原作者的中文写作”。主张两种文字要“得其精而忘其粗，在其内而忘其外”，强调翻译之前，要“将原作（连同思想、感情、气氛、情调等等）化为我有”，“译事要以艺术修养为根本”。他还特别提出了“行文流畅，用字丰富，色彩变化”作为译文的美学要求，不拘泥于文字的形式对应，主张“采用西洋长句，创造中国语言，加多语法变化”，“译文必须为纯粹之中文，无生硬拗口之病”。正因为他对译文的这些处理，形成了独特的翻译风格，以至被译界誉为“傅雷体华文语言”。 　　著名法文翻译家罗新璋先生在上世纪60年代，曾把傅雷的译文与法文原文逐段对照抄写，在当时傅雷已译的274.8万字中，他对照重抄了254.8万字，认为傅雷的翻译，忠实、贴切，又不拘一格。人民文学出版社曾委托罗新璋校订傅雷翻译的《幻灭》，全书50万字，结果只发现有一句不够理想。或许有人对傅雷的翻译观和译文的忠实可能有不同的看法，但这绝不影响人们对傅雷在翻译创新方面所做努力及所获成就的高度评价。     崇高的职业道德 　　傅敏在评论傅雷时说：“父亲一生都在追求‘perfect’（完美）。”傅雷确实是位完美主义者，随便什么事，一到他手里，都要做得好上加好，待人、处事、写文章、搞翻译，悉概如此。而支撑他这种精益求精认真劲儿的动力，正是他身上所体现的崇高的职业道德。 　　搞翻译，他要求自己：“事先熟读原著，不厌求详，尤为要者。任何作品，不精读四五遍决不动笔，是为译事基本法门。”为了吃透原著，他十分重视搜集资料，做好研究。译巴尔扎克作品时，他请法国朋友买来一大批巴尔扎克研究材料，并做了大量笔记，以至睡觉“都做巴尔扎克的梦”。他坚持苦练翻译基本功，他的法文基础本已相当扎实，在译《幻灭》时虽已53岁，还是先把全书七百五十余页法文中的一千一百多个生词挑出来，每天发狠温习三四百个，并以此与儿子傅聪日练钢琴相勉励。为译好《高老头》中的土语，他特意买了厚达五千余页的《国语词典》，潜心研究南北方言的差异。对有疑难的作品，他坚持先试译，自挑毛病。译《高老头》时曾反复推敲，三次重译。《贝姨》译出后，他发现把蓝衣译成绿衣，注释也错了，连忙在《高老头》重译本的序言中做了自我批评。据傅敏的回忆，已被人们公认为优秀译本的《约翰·克利斯朵夫》，傅雷自己仍不满意，以至“后来连看都不敢看”，甚至要把第一次的译本烧掉。     可贵的“傅雷精神” 　　傅雷的翻译成就本已令人瞩目，前些年随着《傅雷家书》的问世，使人们对傅雷的思想、人品有了进一步的认识。如果对傅雷这座“里程碑”上的许多文字加以浓缩，那么留给后人的就是“傅雷精神”四个大字。 　　“傅雷精神”的内涵，依我的理解，首先是傅雷的赤子之心。他感情热烈，视野宽广，喜欢议论国家大事，社会上许多情况都知道，算得上“秀才不出门，能知天下事”。他为人刚毅秉直，不平则鸣，敢说真话。最典型的一件事，就是50年代文化部沈雁冰部长主持召开全国翻译工作会议时，傅雷虽未出席，但却提交了万言书，不避得罪人之嫌，列举了文学译作中种种错译不当之处。后来有人对其中某些材料表示质疑，他能很快指出错在哪本书哪一页哪一段，原来他平时非常关心和研究市场出现的译作，所提的材料都有根有据。1957年“大鸣大放”时，他也是出于爱护之心，就翻译、出版、美术等方面存在的问题写了十几封意见书，不料竟因此被错划为“右派”。“摘帽”后他不改初衷，依然诚实待人，从不掩饰自己的观点。有一次他替人民文学出版社翻译《艺术哲学》，编辑对译文提出了一些意见，这本是很普通的小事，可是傅雷却相当认真地写了很长的书面答复，明讲哪些可以接受，哪些不能接受，道理是什么。在那个年代，有如此勇气坚持讲真话，这可不是轻易的事情。 　　其次是傅雷强调的一种哲学观——“通”。他说：“为学最重要的是‘通’，‘通’才能不拘泥、不迂腐、不酸、不八股；‘通’才能培养气节、胸襟、目光；‘通’才能成为大，不大便不博。”傅雷这番话本是针对做学问讲的，其实放大到他的为人处世，同样是适用的。据傳聪回忆，傳雷非常崇尚“希腊精神”，认为“这种精神所强调的是平衡、自然的发展”。我想，傅雷所追求的“通”和“平衡”，也就是倡导对话与和谐的一种境界。傅雷在翻译上追求形似与神似的协调；对人对己都强调诚实诚恳；做人表里一致，不违心，不虚伪，等等，这些都是在追求平衡及和谐的心态。 　　最后是傅雷牢记信念不动摇。1992年傅敏曾经对金圣华就“傅雷精神”做了这样的概括：“不重物质，讲求奉献；不计酬劳，只为了要完成理想。”傳雷自己也坦言：“得失成败尽量置之度外，只求竭尽所能，无愧于心。”傅雷正是把这种竭尽所能、讲求奉献的信念，不仅融入了自己的译著，更体现在自己毕生的言行之中，并以不惜性命的巨大勇气实现了人格的升华。杨绛先生说过：“傅雷的严肃认真，在前辈学人中有口皆碑，他在选择翻译作品时也是极为慎重的。作为一位翻译大师，自身特有这崇高的学术品格，也正是这种品格的照射，使他的译著时时闪耀着人性的光辉。”就让我们借用杨绛先生的这一段话，来表达我们对傅雷先生的怀念吧。

Our brain is like muscles. The more you use and exercise it, the stronger it becomes. But, if you want to get maximum results, you should do more than just practice. What you need is deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is the kind of practice that stretches the boundaries of your capabilities. While in normal practice you just do the same activity again and again, in deliberate practice you push yourself to the limit. It’s not easy, but deliberate practice makes the difference between an expert and everyone else.

The principle of deliberate practice can be applied in whatever field you want to excel in, but here I will focus on mind development. Below are 8 ways to challenge and exercise your mind. Choose some of them you haven’t done and take your mind to the next level:

1. Read challenging articles

You can measure the difficulty level of an article by using Google Docs. Here is how to do it:

Create a new document

Paste the content of the article to the new document

Open the Tools -Word Count menu item. It will show you three metrics: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kindcaid Grade Level, and Automated Readability Index. The higher it is, the more difficult the article is.

Of course, it’s not necessary to measure the difficulty level of every article you read. Simply take some samples from a blog or web site and you will have good idea about the difficulty level of the articles there.

2. Read challenging books

Classic books are good candidates since they are usually more difficult to read than new books. You could start with my list of classic books. You can also read the Pulitzer-winning books.

3. Read academic journals

One form of challenging reading we often overlook is academic journals. There are a lot of free journal articles you can read from Open science Directory. Some of the journal articles in Google Scholar are also free. Go there, pick a topic of your interest and read a journal article.

4. Play mind games

Choose a free mind game to play and you can have fun while exercising your mind. I started playing Sudoku last week and it was more difficult than I expected. But over time my mind got used to it and I can now solve the puzzles faster.

5. Aim to produce certain number of ideas everyday

The ideas can be in whatever fields you are working on. In my case, I try to write certain number of words everyday. Q10 - which I first learned from Dale - is an excellent tool you can use if you are a writer. One of its features is global target with which you can set the target number of words you want to write.

6. Brainstorm using thinking tools

There are many thinking tools you can use. The book Thinkertoys has many of them in one book and the web site Exploratree has a collection of tools you can use.

7. Do ultradian sprint

Doing ultradian sprint is a good way to train your focus and concentration. One trait of a well-trained brain is the ability to concentrate for long time and ultradian sprint can help you increase your ability to concentrate.

8. Set a project

Is there a project that has been in the back of your mind for some time? Perhaps you postpone it because you think it’s too difficult. Well, that’s a good candidate for deliberate practice. Often we are afraid of failure, but a mantra to quick progress is to make mistakes and make them quick. This way you will have a short feedback loop that will help you adjust your performance faster.

As I wrote in the beginning of this article, a key of deliberate practice is to push your current limit of ability. These challenges will stretch your boundary when you first do them, but after some time, you will get comfortable with it and it will no longer be deliberate practice. Here are some things you can do to keep making them deliberate practice:

1. For reading, try reading something in an unfamiliar field or read more challenging materials in the same field.

2. For playing mind games, increase the level of difficulty or try a new game you are not familiar with.

3. For producing certain number of ideas everyday, increase the target number or the quality of the ideas.

4. For doing ultradian sprint, increase the duration of the session.

5. For thinking challenge, try more difficult challenges.

6. For setting project, increase the scope of the project or do similar projects with stricter deadline.
