第三部分:阅读理解(20小题;每小题2分,满分40)

阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(ABCD) 中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

(A)

When I was a boy, my father told me that he could do anything he wanted to do. Dad said that he wanted to be the first to develop color prints in our city, and so he did.

When I was 16, Dad looked closely at the violin I played and said to me that he wanted to make one. He read about violin making, and then became a violinmaker at the age of 43. He bought the tools and materials, opened a small store and set Mom up as the shopkeeper, while he worked at a local company. He retired from the company 17 years later and continued to make violins and other instruments.

Dad often wondered why the Stradivarius violins sounded so beautiful. Some experts said that it was the unique(独一无二的)varnish(油漆)that gave those instruments their beautiful sound. Dad argued that chemists could examine the varnish if that was the answer.

One of Dad’s friends asked him once which kind of wood was used to make violins. When Dad explained that the top was made of spruce, his friend said that he had an old piece of spruce Dad might be interested in.

He worked for the next 12 months making a violin from the wood that his friend had given him. It proved to be a superior violin and it would become Dad’s masterpiece(杰作) . He was convinced that the secret of the Stradivarius sound was in the wood itself.

Later, the instrument was stolen. Dad’s spirit was broken by the robbery(盗窃) , and he stopped making instruments. But he kept the music shop until he was 80 years old, selling guitars and violins.

My father has been gone for 14 years now. The violin has been missing for more than 25 years. Somewhere a musician is playing a late-20th-century violin with an excellent sound. The owner today may never understand why this ordinary-looking violin sounds so much like a Stradivarius.

51. The author mentions his father’s developing color prints _____.

A. to show that his father’s real interest was not in making violins

B. to prove that his father could do anything he wanted to do

C. to give an example proving that his father was an inventor

D. to describe the real thing that made the author believe his father

52. What did the author’s father think about Stradivarius violins?

A. The varnish was different from the others.

B. The way of making them was particular.

C. The wood of the violins was special.

D. They could only be examined by chemists.

53. From the underlined sentence, we can learn that the author’s father _____.

A. liked the violin very much

B. got mad after this happened

C. lost interest in instruments

D. didn’t want to become famous

54. We can infer from the last paragraph that the author _____.

A. hates the thief very much    B. misses his father a lot

C. really wants to play the violin  D. wonders who’s playing the violin now

(B)

When an official at the U. S. Open Pocket Pool(台球)Championship saw a 9-year-old girl playing at one of the tournament tables, he told her that spectators(观众)were not allowed to play. But much to his surprise, the girl was actually a competitor. That was nine years ago, and today, with five U. S. Open Women’s titles behind her and a recently won world championship, no one is likely to mistake Jean Balukas for a spectator again.

It doesn’t seem too surprising that Jean became caught up in pool——her father owns a pool hall within walking distance of the family’s home in Brooklyn. When she was just tall enough to see over the table, she fell in love with the game soon. Five years later Jean was ready to enter her first U. S. Open. She still remembers the letter the officials sent her reminding her that she wouldn’t be allowed to stand on a box to play.

As Jean improved, she found it increasingly difficult to play games at her father’s pool hall. “If I’d beat one of the guys, his friends would laugh at them about losing to me,” she says. Now Jean comes to the hall only weeks before a tournament when she plays Johnny Goon, her father’s pool manager.

荆州市2011年高中一年级学年质量检测英语试题 - willy - 陈勇的教科研博客

That Johnny can beat her shows the gap that now exists in pool — as in other sports — between the top men and women competitors. “I’m supposedly the top woman player, but I’d have a hard time beating the number 50 man,” says Jean. “If I was a boy and played pool, I’d be a nobody.

Jean thinks that women pool players still have a long way to go because pool has been a man’s game for so long. When they think of pool players, people have this picture in their head of gambling(赌博)and smoke, she says.

Jean won four of the seven games in these two years. She was as surprised as anyone else at her performance, even though she was a New York City tennis champion and center for her high-school basketball team. Jean does not take full credit for her achievements, saying, I think what I have in sports is a gift from God, and that’s why I can get out there and do so well.

55. We can learn from the first passage that Jean Balukas_____.

A. had become well-known at the age of 9

B. had achieved great fame at the age of 18

C. was often asked to play with men players

D. was refused to play in the U. S. Open for her young age

56. The letter Jean received before her first U. S. Open_____.

A. told her to arrive in time for the game

B. showed people’s doubt about her ability

C. told her about the basic rules of the game

D. invited her to compete in the U. S. Open

57. Jean Balukas believed that women pool players_____.

A. fall far behind men players

B. aren’t suitable for a man’s game

C. are impossible to beat any man player

D. have a bad reputation(名声)for gambling and smoking

58. By saying the underlined words in the last paragraph Jean meant that _____.

A. women players had a long way to go

B. she wouldn’t stop before her great achievement

C. she had much confidence in the game

D. she achieved her success because of her born gift

(C)

Parents have been advised not to put ham and other processed (加工过的)meats into their children’s lunch-boxes to help them reduce the risk of cancer.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) said parents should act now to stop their children developing a taste for processed meat because eating too much over the years can raise the risk of bowel ()cancer.

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA)said processed meat was fine for lunchboxes but should not be eaten too often.

It is only in recent years that the connection between processed meat and bowel cancer in adults has been made. Some studies suggest that about 10% of bowel cancer cases in the UK could be prevented if everyone ate less than 70g a week.

Even though the available evidence looks only at adult diets, rather than child diets, the World Cancer Research Fund believes that bad eating habits can start in childhood.

Marni Craze, the organization’s children’s education manager, said, It is better if children learn to regard processed meat as an occasional treat (享受) .

She said, Putting ham in your child’s lunchbox may seem like an easy job, especially for parents who do not have a lot of time to prepare their child’s lunchbox.

However, Sian Porter, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association(BDA) , said that ham still had a place during dinner hour.

She said, Variety(多样性)is the most important thing, and ham can still be used sometimes——just not every day.

The Food Standards Agency, which advises the public on healthy eating, has published its own list of lunchbox menus——some of which include ham.

An FSA spokesman said, processed meats can form part of a balanced diet and parents shouldn’t be concerned about including these in their children’s lunchboxes now and again.

However, they can contain high levels of fat and salt, so we wouldn’t suggest eating them too often. Parents should only use them occasionally.

59. The underlined word occasional in Paragraph 6 means _____.

A. frequently        B. sometimes        C. quickly           D. happily

60. According to Craze, some parents include ham in their children’s lunchboxes because _____.

A. their children have developed a taste for ham

B. they believe processed meat contains more protein

C. they don’t have enough time to cook for their children

D. some studies find ham can form part of a balanced diet

61. Both the FSA and the BDA agree that _____.

A. parents should not put ham into children’s lunchboxes

B. processed meat’s effect on children is still uncertain

C. parents can let their children eat ham sometimes

D. it is OK for children to eat processed meat for dinner

62. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Eating ham does no good

B. Parents warned over lunchbox ham

C. Variety: Most important thing for diet

D. What should be on children’s menus?

(D)

Eat local. ”It’s one way to reduce human effect on the planet. Eating local means to try to buy and consume foods that are grown in places close to home. However, most of the food sold at supermarkets is not locally grown or produced. Trucks and planes deliver these foods from hundreds or thousands of miles away. During the transportation, greenhouse(温室)gases are produced, causing global warming. So the shorter the distance your foods must travel, the less the harm is done to the environment.

But how do you get local food if you live in a large city, hundreds of miles away from farmsEnvironmental health scientist Dickson Despommier and his students came up with the idea of a vertical(垂直的)farm. 荆州市2011年高中一年级学年质量检测英语试题 - willy - 陈勇的教科研博客

A vertical farm is a glass-walled structure that could be built as tall as a skyscraper(摩天大楼) . Since the garden is built upwards, rather than outwards, it requires much less space than an ordinary farm. The world is quickly running out of room for ordinary farming. Vertical farms could be a key to this situation. Despommier imagines a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor. The walls of the building would be clear, to allow crops to get as much sunlight as possible. Depending on a city’s water resources, Despommier thinks hydroponic(水培的)farming is another method for the vertical farm which needs no soil to grow plants.

Despommier says the hydroponic greenhouses would use a system that would use a city’s waste water and fill it with nutritions to make the crops grow. If this method works, it would provide food to a city and save millions of tons of water.

The idea of a vertical farm has attracted the attention of government officials around the world. Scott Stringer, a government official from New York City, thinks the city is suitable for the vertical farming. “Obviously we don’t have much land left for us, Stringer said. But the sky is the limit in Manhattan.

Despommier admits that there is still a lot of work to be done to make vertical farms a reality. But I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way, he says.

63. Why are people advised to eat local?

A. Because it means convenience(方便)to people.

B. Because it can help people save a lot of money.

C. Because local food has more nutrition.

D. Because it is environmentally friendly.

64. Which is one of the vertical farm’s benefits when compared with ordinary farming?

A. It produces healthier food.

B. It does less harm to the cities.

C. It needs less space of the city.

D. It requires less transport costs.

65. By saying the sky is the limit in Manhattan, Stringer means _____.

A. people can make full use of vertical space of Manhattan

B. there is a limit for using empty land in Manhattan

C. the height of buildings in Manhattan is limited

D. Manhattan can spread as far as possible

66. What can we learn about the vertical farming in the passage?

A. No soil is needed to grow plants in a vertical farm.

B. It has solved the problem of the food shortage in a big way.

C. It is a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor.

D. Crops are mainly grown in the rainwater in a vertical farm.

(E)

Children who are taught by the best teachers learn twice as fast as those with poor teachers, Prof Dylan William says. Which school a child chooses therefore matters much less than which teachers they have. A simple method of providing feedback(反馈)on students’ performance is far more useful than providing expensive computer equipment or even reducing class sizes. In some cases, money spent on these things could be money wasted, if teachers do not change the way they teach.

He said earlier studies showed that the reduction of class sizes from 30 to 20 did not change teaching methods, and therefore the huge amount of money was wasted.

I’m in favor of cost benefit analyses(分析) , he said. Any measures must be thought about. Education is expensive. I want children to have nice buildings and computers. But we need to look at how we can spend this money wisely. To show this idea, he said that if 60 students were taught in three classes of 20 students instead of two classes of 30, it would create 150,000 extra classes in England. At a cost of around 20,000 per class, the possible benefits should be weighed up against the cost.

Prof William said extra training would be needed in how to give quick feedback. One way of providing such quick feedback is to use a traffic light system, he says.

Students show a green light if they have understood what has been taught, a yellow one for partial(部分的)understanding and a red one if they do not understand.

This way, Prof William says, a teacher can find out how many students are following the lesson, and at what speed to take the class.

A spokesperson said Assessment for Learning (AfL)could bring important benefits. We introduced AfL into our National Strategy in 2009, and want it to(be rolled out) everywhere. We believe it helps improve good practice and track students’ progress.

67. In the opinion of William, how can we make education more effective?

A. By giving students quick feedback.

B. By reducing the size of a class.

C. By equipping the classroom with computers.

D. By having nice school buildings.

68. William wanted to tell readers in Para. 3 that_____.

A. extra money caused by reducing class size is wasted

B. nice buildings and computers are also necessary

C. money spent on education is worthwhile

D. the possible benefits of training teachers are evident

69. Why did William suggest using a traffic light system in class?

A. To attract the attention of students to the lesson.

B. To make it easier for teachers to manage students.

C. To judge how many students understand the lesson.

D. To teach students the importance of keeping traffic rules.

70. The underlined words be rolled out in the last paragraph probably mean_____.

Text 1

W: Tim, you play the violin, don’t you?

M: I used to. But I haven’t played it for quite some time. I really have no time these days with all my studies. Why do you ask?

W: I’m trying to organize a group to play at some parties on weekends. We still need a violin player.

Test 2

M: We could go to a ball game this evening or would you rather eat in a restaurant and then see a film

W: To tell you the truth, I can’t really go anywhere this evening, because I’m expecting an important phone call.

Test 3

W: Have you got any idea what to buy for Mary’s birthday

M: Well, I’ll get her a new school bag and I promised to take her to a film. What about you

W: Oh, I haven’t decided yet. I’ll probably buy her that new music record as she likes it so much.

Text 4

M: You can put your shirt back on. Your heart sounds strong.

W: I feel stronger, too. I don’t get tired so easily.

M: And you’re down five more pounds.

W: Maybe I am, but I hate the diet. Everything I like is no good for me.

Text 5

W: I wish you’d come shopping with me this Saturday.

M: OK. Why do you want me to go shopping?

W: Well, it’s difficult to buy a new pair of shoes for your birthday without your feet being  present.

Text 6

M: WowWe’ll certainly stay here again next time we’re passing through.

W: Good. Do let us know in advance. And we’ll try to get you the same room.

M: That will be lovely. It may be quite soon in fact.

W: Oh. How is that?

M: Well. We’re driving to the south of Spain in the next couple of days. And we may come back this way.

W: Do give us a ring if you decide to. I hope you have a pleasant trip.

Text 7

W: Hi, Mark, how did you spend your weekend?

M: I went to the countryside with my parents. I picked grapes on the farm helping my grandparents.

W: Picking grapes? Wonderful! But I remember you like fishing best.

M: My grandparents bought a small farm and they only plant grapes.

W: That’s great! You should have called for me.

M: I thought you should go swimming with Carol.

W: We planned to but her father was ill that day, so I could only watch TV at home.

M: Sorry to hear that. But I brought back a basket of grapes for you. They are really fresh and delicious.

W: Really? You are so kind.

Test 8

W: John, I thought you were going to leave early today to take your son to the show.

M: I’m still planning to, but I can’t leave until I finish typing all the letters.

W: Can’t you leave that until tomorrow

M: No. The boss wants them first thing tomorrow morning.

W: How many have you got left

M: About 5.

W: Why don’t you just go ahead, John? I’ll do the letters for you.

M: Thank you very much, Janet. You’re so kind.

Text 9

W: The temperature hasn’t got above five degrees centigrade for three weeks, and it’s supposed to snow again tonight. We have to clear the snow off the steps. This is not beautiful!

M: I don’t mind the extra work. For me, it’s worthwhile to be able to experience the fresh air. And you know how I love skiing, iceskating and ...

W: I know, and I’m glad you’re having fun. It’s just that I’m tired of being cold. I wish spring were here.

M: Well, I agree that winter does seem long when we get to January.

W: It seemed long to me in November!

M: It doesn’t look nice today. There’s no sign of sun. Look, the sky over there in the west is getting dark.

Text 10

Hello, everyone. I’d like to tell you something about the student clubs in our school. Let’s begin with our reading club. It was first started in 1968, and has 90 members now. Every Thursday afternoon, they gather together to exchange their ideas on books. And you may join them to share your views. If you are a music lover, come to our music club. This club has a total of 85 members who usually meet on Saturday. Sometimes they go to the concerts together and sometimes they give performances themselves. For those who enjoy outdoor sports, the bicycle club can be a good choice. Trips are usually organized on Wednesday and last at least two hours. Together with 50 members, you can not only see the beautiful nature, but also make yourself stronger. Of course, there are also many other clubs in our school. For more information, please go to the school website.
